Sensational Single Colors

Sensational Single Colors

Add  a touch of drama to your landscape with a single-color planting. Single colors can be stunning in a small area or as an accent section in a larger garden. If you take advantage of successive blooming and fruiting seasons, and fill in with container plants during dormant periods, you can enjoy your favorite color year-round.

The selection of drought-tolerant  plants is so broad, it’s easy to create a xeriscape in almost any single color. Use yellows to warm up a cool, shady nook.  Tone down a hot spot with greens alone- leaves of various shapes and shades, even green blossoms. (Yes,  really!) Sometimes a second color adds to the show. Reds can be overpowering alone, but striking when paired with whites. Blues often seem happier when mixed with pink.

By far the easiest single color to work with is white. Rockrose, lantana, wisteria, agapanthus and coast rosemary are just a few of the many drought-tolerant plants that come in white varieties. In some species, even the foliage is white or gray because of water wise adaptations such as fuzzy leaves. An added bonus: pale flowers are often deliciously fragrant.

White gardens like the one you see here create a peaceful ambience. In sunlight, especially against rich, green foliage, white blossoms look crisp, clean and pure. And at dusk, as brighter colors fade, white takes on an almost ethereal glow. Dramatic indeed!

Variegated leaves can offset a white garden, adding depth and drama.
